From your tweets Wade, it sounded like it was a good game. Having a full house adds to the excitement. Glad to hear of the boost for sr aaa hockey out west.

Yes, this IS the biggest signing in SR AAA history.
Theo Fleurys' 2005 signing in Horse Lake was the only thing that comes close...but...Fleury was a Calgary Flame alumni who went to a northern Alberta First Nation Reservation. He was a great "heel" accenting an entire team which carried the villian banner with a natural look. That sold tickets, to be sure.
But...this is Captain Canada...playing for an established SR AAA team 10 minutes out of Edmonton.
So, maybe the gate draws will be comparable between Theo & Ryan...but...the timing of this Smyth signing is SO significant. SR AAA desperately NEEDED this to happen. Theos' signing was a big $$$ maker but it was also a major controversy and a black eye for a lot of people.

Rick Vaive was just a big a signing. Smyth drafted 6th overall; Vaive 5th. Smyth scored 389 NHL goals; Vaive 441 including an incredible 3 straight 50 goal seasons with the Leafs.
No need to compare as the Smyth signing is huge. Wish there was a way to watch a game or two on TV. But Vaive in the GTA was as popular as Smyth is in Alberta.
Let's hope Mr Robertson has a few more tricks up his sleeve for the McCoys for this year and more importantly for next year if they get the Cup.
Can already see it - Smyth comes to Dundas to play against a team stacked again with exPros. Just the shot Senior needs.
Wade, or anyone in Stoney Plain, please keep us up to date on each game.

Don and ac just posted exactly what I was going to post.
You couldn't get any bigger than Rick Vaive in the 80's.
I remember going to Market Street arena to see Vaive play when he signed with Dundas in 2002-03 One game in particular comes to mind. The fire code for # of spectators must have been exceeded. Fans were 3 deep along the standing room rails to see Vaive.
And also agree would be fabulous for the Allan Cup if Smyth could play next year in Dundas. Not that the exposure wouldn't be there this year in South Prairie but the Toronto media would eat it up here in Dundas/Hamilton should a name like Ryan Smith play in the Allan Cup.

Rick Vaive had been retired for over 10 years when he came to Dundas and a story like that...happening in the GTA...doesn't get the same kind of focus or hype it does in Edmonton area where Ryan Smyth has only been out of the NHL for a year and a half and I was still in the local news every week even before he came to Stony.
Also...in regards to the 2017 Allan Cup and the seemingly very presumptuous posters here who think it's already a lock Dundas/Hamilton will get it...
The deal is this: Hockey Canada has put the 2017 tournament up for Provincial bidding. They will select a Province from among the Provinces expressing desire to host it and that Province will then select a HOST venue.
Stony Plain along with multiple other suitor(s) have already stepped up. Dundas/Hamilton is merely one of many.
IMO...Ryan Smyth is far more likely to be playing an 2017 Allan Cup tournament in Alberta than Ontario.
Maybe Dundas can bring back #22 (again) and spearhead the drive?

Harvey and Walker signing in their hometown was HUGE news in ON back when it happened...especially as they were still current NHL players during the lockout...Walker played the Fleury 'heel' role to a 'T' when he left for Dundas...that made for some serious heat,..and packed houses around these parts. But no, neither guy has the provincial or national love affair that Smyth would bring in AB.

Stony has added a Sherrif to help make sure 94 won't be gunned down riding through the pass: Grant McNeill...had an NHL stint...big, tough, Albert-Bred D-Man should help give the Eagles some fangs in what is sure to be a carnivorous 2017 playoffs.

Smyth only played 1 game and is still allowed to play in playoffs? Unless there is some sort of special regional or league requirement out there, I don't think(?) he would be required to play any regular season games at all, so long as he was properly signed by the required February deadline date.

Smyth only played 1 game and is still allowed to play in playoffs? Yes. Absolutely. There is no requirements to play ANY games...a player must only be carded prior to Feb. 10 deadline to be eligible. Smyth will be playing ALL SR AAA playoff games.
