it really is too bad.
This is an area that the hockey guru's have to take a long hard look at and make a decision one way or the other...recognize the hockey for what it is, promote and market it at that, or leave it the hell alone , forget about it and let it die!!
There is nothing anyone can do! Owners, managers, business groups have been doing it all along by themselves up til now and still getting nowhere.
That article probably does not reflect what they really go through to put a hockey team together up north.
Guys not showing up, work etc...all senior teams go through that. Its the assistance you get from your league conveynors and / or their governing body ( which ultimately is hockey canada) is where the pitfalls should be addressed .
Im not saying there is a golden solution, but as it states in the article...Senior hockey gets no respect from its governing bodys...period!!!!
They get paid pretty well to dictate how a team/league can operate. If teams/leagues started folding everywhere these guys would have no position to be paid to do or at least, there would be "less" guys not needed at the trough!!

Have to wonder if this isn't the first domino to fall for HNO SR AAA Hockey.
Fort Frances and Thunder Bay (if they come back) are going to grow tired of each other.
And also...interesting to read mention of that deplorable Penticton Vees team which cost the Thistles $7000.
The Vees were a big problem for a few SR AAA teams last year and that should be on the shoulders of Hockey BC!
There is so much more I could say right now...but...most of it...I have said before.
Any-hoo...
The good news is...the Bentley Generals will HOST the 2013 Allan Cup!!!

this is what almost always happens when a team that doesn't play in an actual league puts together a barnstorming act to host a 1-off run at a championship.

It sems the guy running the show stepped down and thought nobody would pick up the Team and he was wrong the Club will operate again as will Fort Francis, which is great news. That said Jim brought up a good point.I was told that this weekend at the OHA meetings.

did Fort Francis not already have a team this year?
...speaking of 1-off barnstorming acts!

Hi Jim.....I'm not sure I understand your point, if you were trying to make one.
Also speaking personally, if Don Robertson's info is correct that Fort Francis plans to continue operations, then it is welcome news in my books, and I commend them for being dedicated enough to hang in, to what has to be a less than ideal situation in their northern region.

no, I was just wondering how FF is taking over the Kenora operation, when they already had a team this year...ae they merging the 2 franchises?

Jim, I am not sure if perhaps you are misreading Don's message or if I have missed something. Given the number of times lately that my wife has questioned my thought process, it's probably me. Please be kind enough to allow me to elaborate, and forgive me if I have missed the message somehow.
What I derived from Don's message, was that the original post of Kenora's demise became premature when another party has surfaced to keep the Kenora team alive. I read that as being completely unrelated to Fort Francis. I think the return of Fort Francis was only mentioned because if Kenora was gone and T-Bay questionable at best, then it would be natural to imagine that Fort Francis would have to reconsider their own functionality, with little or no one to play against in an official league or otherwise. I can only hope that I have it correct in the interest of some form of continuing play this coming season in Northern Ontario.
This upcoming season would actually be season three for Fort Francis. In their first year they almost became the Northern rep to meet the south, but unfortunately became victims of an administrative ruling in their round robin final. Undeterred and no doubt a little wiser to the system, they returned for their second season last year achieving respectable success on the ice and also a birth in the Allan Cup. This is why I was going to suggest that the "1-off barnstorming" comment would not be a fair characterization in the case of Fort Francis, who were a very welcome addition when an enthusiastic manager Dean Bruyere announced the teams creation in 2009-10.
Hope I've got this right, because admitting that my wife is on to something won't be easy, but of course I'll beg for humble forgiveness if I have to.....again!

The Kenora team is dangling by a thread. Don't be surprised when you see Kenora and Fort join and field 1 team. They will be a favorite to come out of HNO. Hopefully the MHL will be able to field a stronger rep. What a joke last year. Kenora 6-2 over Dundas. I heard the Kenora boys took the pedal off the gas that game. I guess we will see what happens.

Interesting speculation, if thats what it is.
Therefore, treating it as a hypothetical only at this time, and if bryb61's suggestion was to actually happen, then I guess my questions would be.....A Northern favorite amongst who? Is there any official status on T-Bay? Are there any other teams expected to surface as competition? Or alternatively, would such a merged team simply find a game here and a game there and then submit as a "challenge" to the Allan Cup?

munzie I took it to mean the Kenora team was folding and being operated by the owners in FF...who already have a team...that didn't make sense to me...I could be mistaken

There aren't any perfect solutions... but... there is a 'plan' which would make the most sense here. I am wondering if the people pulling the strings in this embarassing calamity can REALLY put 2 & 2 together? All bets are off.

Fort Frances will have a team, speculation is that some Kenora players will be invited to fill our roster that may be vacated by the inclusion of a Thunder Bay team. We had 3 or 4 guys that played for us this year that more than likely will play in Thunder Bay, if they field a team. Games will not be any more of a problem than they already are because of issues previously mentioned. We have NCAA Division lll teams all over Minnesota and North Dakota that we have played in the past and are willing to continue to do so. Having said all that, I wont be managing the team this year because of family reasons but may return next year as a rink is being built in my community that will provide us a home and ample ice team to play....This is not an easy undertaking, trying to survive in Senior loop. After 2 years in existance I only met the league convernor once.....and that was at the Allan Cup....Good Luck to those that have the financial means and opponents to continue....its an uphill battle......I hope to see you guys in Lloydminister....as a fan I mean...lol
