Kinda a JR hockey headline level bit of news breaking today.
But I think it relates to SR AAA (or what’s left of it)
BC’s JR league announced today that they’ve voted to leave the CJHL and operate independently, going forward.
This is a checkpoint in the road toward the breakdown of JR A hockey in Canada. This is (another) key prediction I made a few years ago now...when I was illustrating the who/how and why’s of the breakdown of SR AAA hockey.
It’s also another sad confirmation. One of those times I wish I was wrong...but...nope.
The system is broken at BOTH levels.

This could be good news. Could be bad news.
I also saw this coming, not necessarily with BCJHL first, and can see other levels following suit.
There is obviously an issue at the top (Hockey Canada). We’ve seen the complete disregard for Senior AAA for years.
Breaking away will officially open some eyes. Does Hockey Canada react. Do they wait for Alberta to join them? Does it cause a domino effect inc Senior?
The issue is each group breaks away and the National Championships go away. Leagues play in Silos. Centennial Cup will now not include BC and potentially Alberta. Is the Mem Cup next. Allan Cup?
Is this good. Or is this bad?

Just saw a video of Rod Pedersen from March 25th and in it he said "Brooks, Okotoks, Grand Prairie, and Spruce Grove may join the BCHL"

The BCHL will in fact be leaving the Canadian Junior Hockey League and posted a statement on the league Twitter page. No confirmation yet on whether or not teams in the AJHL will be leaving. BCHL

Honestly, I’m kind of excited for this. Could open up a whole new Jr level system since it’s one, possibly two, of the top tiered Tier II leagues leaving.
I think this is a kick in the pants to HC and in the right direction.

Hopefully, they have a good relationship with BC Hockey. BC Hockey gets to file what classification they play at and Hockey Canada membership gets to vote on it. From the looks of it it could end up being pay back for what the rest of the Junior A leagues have put up from the BCHL. Could they possibly end up using the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League set up? I don't think any USA Hockey league will touch them but could they end up dealing with the United Hockey Union (AAU Hockey) or work something out with the self-governing United States Premier Hockey League and their National Collegiate Development Conference, which is self professed Tier-II Junior A (on par with the NAHL). The BCHL relies on more American players and players from other provinces than any other Junior A league in Canada. From what I have read they are more concerned about producing more NCAA Division I players rather than for Canadian Major Junior, which is the main money maker of the other junior A leagues.
Getting back to senior hockey: Hopefully, this rebellion against the status quo in Hockey Canada's system gets Hockey Canada to take a look at all of its jurisdictional categories and gives senior hockey some more attention to save it in the short term and hopefully nurture the senior level to strengthen it for the future.

One thing is sure, since they do produce an insane amount of NCAA players, they’ll have to see how the split may impact their standing as an amateur league should anything change with their status.

That's because they rely (recruit) the most on American players (of the CJHL teams) and that was part of the reason why they wanted out of the CJHL.

The key that I feel kinda ties into our SR AAA situation is that these BC JR to teams have been abiding by rules that they felt are outdated & no longer suitable for what they’re trying to do.
They tried to get an ear ...and how much they were listened to...Idunno.
But I’m not surprised they’ve gone maverick and I’m not gonna be surprised if other situations similar to this happen down the road

I would love to see a more all encompassing senior AAA format here in ON...we have a very robust 'outlaw' league that plays entertaining hockey and isn't subject to the draconian OHA or Hockey Canada regulations...allowing these operators to compete with the traditional ACH league would be great for fans and players across SW Ont.
IMO, of course. There are insurance issues and other disagreements that would have to be worked out, and several old conflicts to put aside...LOL
