To avoid the debacle of what happened in Steinbach last April, could someone please explain what actually is an Import. It was my understanding that it is a player that is transferred from one branch to another? is that correct. IE. Player X is from Quebec and is playing in Ontario in 2016 and goes back to Quebec in 2017....is he then considered an import?

Does player X need a transfer from Quebec to play in what ever league he is going to? Weather it is Amateur or Pro?

Does player X need a transfer from Quebec to play in what ever league he is going to? Weather it is Amateur or Pro? Not necessarily. Imports are defined by when/where they were last carded with Hockey Canada. For example...a player who played major midget in Ontario and then went to QUE to play in the QMJHL would still be carded in Ontario as far as Hockey Canada is concerned. Because QMJHL isn't a Hockey Canada league.

What about players that play Pro outside of their Provincial jurisdiction? If they come back to play Senior AAA are they considered imports?

I might as well stop beating around the Bush here...I was looking at all the rosters and checking to see there stats.. and I seen 10- 12 players on the Stoney Creek Generals who played outside their province according to Eliteprospect.com. I thought they would be considered Imports if they needed Transfers back from there last teams in 2016. I could be wrong.. but with the debacle last year in Steinbach, I would not want to see that happen again. It may have cost my Cataracts a berth into the Allan Cup finals.

It would depend on where they were last carded at the amateur level. I haven't bothered to check Stony Creeks' roster. The ACH abides by Hockey Canada regulations all season long and most of the executive in that league are very reliable/know their sh*t. If the Lieutenants were doing anything non-compliant I'd bet the moon it would've been snagged long ago.

I agree...just didn't want to see the shit show that happened last season. Well, considering the fact the rules & regulations are available for ANYONE to go online and read (this has been the case for 10+ years now) and yet "shit shows" still happen...I'm not sure what to do or say that can put your mind at ease.

I guess when the official rosters are released to the competing teams on Monday we will see what everyone has.I know the Cataracts only have 4-5 first time branch to branches.

I assume college/University is considered Amateur? And what about international transfers are they considered an "import"?

I assume college/University is considered Amateur? And what about international transfers are they considered an "import"? College & University players are considered amateur. In regards to International Transfers...we need to be careful to differentiate between a player coming from a recognized international a branch...whose never been carded by Hockey Canada before...and...a player coming from an International Branch...but...has a prior record of registration with Hockey Canada. Im not certain on this but I believe you could have a player who touches BOTH categories...or...you could also have a player who doesn't count as either one. Either way...I like other situations....actual International Transfers come with a hefty fee and quite a processing time, plus, before an "IT" can be placed into the Hockey Canada Registrar...this transfer process must be paid in full & endorsed. This means it kinda works as a checkpoint on defining the players status completely.
