Thought I would start my annual thread about the upcoming Senior hockey season ( although I think Andrew from Brantford beat me to it after last season ).
I am hopefully seeing a bit of a renaissance for Senior hockey after many years of decline. I think in the modern era, over the last 20 years or so, Canada peaked at close to 30 teams registered as Senior AAA. We dipped to maybe 15-16 a few years back and finally saw a spike in the positive direction this season to 20, with the help of 5 teams in the Atlantic region. The number was actually closer to 18 as neither Powell River or West Coast Heat ended up competing, they were still registered AAA I believe.
So after one of the best Allan Cups in recent memory, I am hoping everyone across the country can contribute - ie how each province will look in 2017-18; will there be any new teams or teams folding, etc, etc.
I realize that most leagues will not have their AGM for many months, but between now and then there will certainly be many happenings. New teams don't just crop up in September. Much planning is required. Many posts obviously are rumours at this point but hoping that those in the know can contribute regular updates:
B.C. - Miffer 31: hopefully you can keep us up to date on Powell River and the West Coast Heat. With the Cup heading back West it would be great to have BC represented again.
Alberta - wade - well we know you will keep us updated buddy. I appreciate your contributions. I disagree with half of what you say sometimes . But you are very knowledgable and I enjoy your posts. Eagles fan: hopefully you can contribute as well. Would be great to hear differing opinions from the Chinook League.
Saskatchewan - saskoilerfan... not sure who else posts from Sask? Will be interesting to see how many of the various teams in Sask will declare AAA next year with the Cup in Rosetown.
Manitoba - jing jang, deebeegee. Both of you post often and seem to have a good handle on Manitoba Senior hockey. Will Terry Yake give it another go. Will IDC and SEPT merge. Some great questions.
Ontario - too many posters to mention all. I love hearing from Donnie Robertson. Easily the most forthcoming Senior executive. Your fans love your openness.
My personal favourite poster is jimc !!!! You have inside knowledge from your time involved with the Cambridge Hornets. Your witty responses are second to none!! Now please tell us icetime can be had at Galt Arena and there will be a new owner for the Hornets!!!!
Sniper81, Generalsfan, cowbellgirl, naitch2727, Andrew (Blast), The Goon: I have missed many but hoping you can all add what you've heard. Would love to have some Thorold and Whitby posters.
Northern Ontario - AFAN - ALL CAPS SAYS IT ALL MY FRIEND. HAHA. ANY CHANCE KENORA COMES BACK?
Quebec - The country would love the Q to jump back into Allan Cup competition. Any news would be appreciated. Is there any chance for the Garaga to resurrect?
New Brunswick - NESHL, jcsmike: NB has been a great addition to Senior AAA. The improvement from last year to this year was great. I was amazed with the speed of both teams. How many teams will declare AAA. Will there be any with the cost to travel to Sask?
PEI - not sure who posts from the Island. Jeff and again NESHL, I believe you both posted during the NESHL Finals. I think I speak for all of Canada when I say everyone would love a PEI team to once again be in an Allan Cup tourney.
Nova Scotia - are there any groups looking to start up Senior AAA?
Newfoundland and Labrador - lionsden, dexterbags, catsfan: easily the most passionate fans in the country. I read the Newfoundland hockey talk forum all the time. I wish we had Senior fans like you do out east. I hope Clarenville and Geand Falls continue as AAA. And hope Gander sorts itself out so you can have a 3-4 team league
Southoftheborder - you seem to have started to contribute over the past year. Great to have posts from the States. You seem to follow most provinces like I do. Any chance Warroad Islanders would join the Manitoba teams to form some sort of league?
Sorry for such a long opening post but it's been a blast this year. Hoping next season is better. Let's start the info flow now!
