Nice to finally have someone close to the situation who might know first hand how things evolved with the 2011 Allan Cup in Kenora. To kenthistl, because you have informed us of your roll with the Thistles, that leads me to figure that perhaps you might be Mr. Ryan Renard. If that would be the case, then I would like to insert that as a senior hockey fan, I have respectful appreciation for those who give of their time and effort to ice a team in Senior hockey.
With that respect in mind, I hope I can be forgiven for questioning your opening sentence remark to hockeypops. In the absence of any better information, I thought hockeypops' two posts were more than a decent effort to shed some constructive light on the subject. He expressed his view, he openly offered that some of his statements were based on rumor, he made some constructive suggestions on how the operation of the event could be improved, and he was polite. Yes, perhaps he was not precisely in sink on every last detail as you might wish, but after reading his posts and your post, perhaps you might be good enough to explain how his account is so "materially different" with what you have offered.
Through information that was sent to me, and about which I was not previously aware, it has been suggested that any organization can bid to be the organizers of an Allan Cup tournament, so long as they can assure that a host hockey team is in place. (i.e. The Kenora Thistles as the host hockey team, and completely independent, the Kenora/Lake of the Woods minor hockey group as the organizing committee). Also advanced to me was the suggestion that the minor hockey group realized a profit from their efforts, as was their legitimate right. After some investigation of the latter, I find that to be probable.
At the risk of beating the same drum again, I still don't feel that all has been revealed as to how and why the Allan Cup in Kenora
shook out the way it did. In a much earlier newspaper article, by Garett Williams in the Kenora Daily Mirror, he quotes Ryan Renard as stating that the team did not have the benefit of a sufficient bank account to run the event. We don't know if the Thistles would have otherwise wished to run it, or if they were interested in partnering, or if they had anything to offer such a partner. We don't know why they were not invited back after one first meeting with the official organizing committee All I know is, that it seems not helpful, when over a period of time, statements are made like "we didn't get a dime", but not much effort is made to explain what inferences might be implied or not. We are not mind readers out here, far away from the scene.
I had hoped by now, that we would be well into a serious discussion about the roll of the powers that be, and the Allen Cup. Heaven knows, there are enough folks who come onto this forum with strong opinion, especially when it comes to the governing bodies. Some of it would seem to be slightly off the mark of course. When it is categorically stated that a person is hauling down a six figures paycheck and then it is alternatively suggested that the same person is actually a volunteer, then one has to wounder a bit. Nevertheless, It would be nice to think that a constructive look at the governing body's could take place, even though there would no doubt be some of those in the know, who would decide to abstain. There is no doubt in my mind that someone in the governing body should have insured that that the organizing committee in Kenora had some plans to raise the profile of the event that has such a deep related history.
It would also be real nice to have someone just give us the straight goods re: A/C 2011, without the reference to someones ass or a hole in the ground.
