Does a team HAVE to play in a AAA league in order to challenge for the Allan Cup?
Meaning...what if a sponsor in NB or NS wanted to register a team of AUS players (5th year players or 3rd/4th year guys who were leaving their program, etc) and make a run?

No, they don't have to play in a league. They would end up having to participate in the Atlantic Regional Qualifying for the Allan Cup against provincial champions from the other provinces in the region for the spot in the Allan Cup.
If they were looking to host the Allan Cup they would have to play at the Senior AAA level the previous season to when they host.

Ice time availability would be a major issue in the greater Halifax area.

A spot like Truro might be able to work.

They might be able to do it in NS if there is no league operating You would still have to playoff against any other NS teams and then win the Atlantic Championship I dont think you could do it in NB as you would be required to join an existing league

From looking at the AUS teams in Nova Scotia, I think only Dal and St. Mary's alums would be likely if you were thinking of a team of former University level players. I don't think that enough players would have stuck around the Antigonish or Wolfville areas to get a team together. And unless the arena that Dal and St. Mary's were talking about building comes to fruition I don't see a Halifax area team. I would think Truro, Amherst or Sydney would be the more likely towns to support a senior hockey team, with Truro and Amherst logistically (travel wise) more feasible it they were to play university teams from either New Brunswick or Nova Scotia to get some game time in. But both towns already have Junior A teams in them, being able to draw fans and getting good ice times could be an issue. I am not opposed to it an would love for it to happen but it would seem like it would be at most a 2-3 year thing and then the money would likely dry out unless they got a major sponsor with ties to the region like JK Irving, Moosehead, Alexander Keith's, Casino Nova Scotia, or Scotia Bank.

How about this for a crazy idea...Major junior teams sponsoring alumni teams for players. The smallest arenas would hold about 2,300-3,000 and those are all QMJHL arenas in Quebec. Call it brand extension or like we call it down here in the states "a tax write off". It could make for some decent teams and get the senior level back on the map.

Fredericton may be a spot where that could be a possibility. A lot of former St. Thomas University [no so much now since the program folded a couple years ago] and UNB players stick around the Fredericton area after they are done university. Same could be said for Moncton, but the market is so saturated there, it would be tough to draw fans there.
