PRESS RELEASE November 20, 2010
TUNDRAS Jump to 3rd Place in Standings
When the Orillia Tundras started this weekend’s action they were tied for the basement position with defending OHA Allan Cup Hockey (ACH) League champs, the Dundas Real McCoys with 5 pts. After their 2 games on the road, the Tundras added 3 out of a possible 4 points to climb into the 3rd spot.
In Friday night’s action both contests were decided in overtime.
ACH league leading Whitby Dunlops continued their winning ways by scoring in the last minute of regulation time to force extra time with Dundas and then scoring in the extra stanza for their 10th straight win.
However, farther west there was more excitement with the visiting Tundras being downed by the home squad, Brantford Blast 7-6 in overtime. Trailing 5-3 the Orillia squad appeared to score a goal but referee Mike Bolibruck waived the goal off and assessed Tundras player Kyle Begley with a head check penalty. Begley disputed the call and was then ejected from the game. While on the power play, Brantford’s Tyler Pelton scored putting the home team up 3 goals with less than five minutes in the third stanza. Orillia’s Assistant Coach Ryan Crowther did his best Don Cherry impersonation a la the start of a Coach’s Corner segment and was abruptly tossed from the game by ref Bolibruck.
That might have been the spark the Tundras needed as 16:47 of the 3rd period Orillia’s Jesse Cook scored. Ex Maple Leaf Greg Johnston scored off the bench as the extra attacker at the 19:17 mark. Then with Brantford’s Chad Spurr in the Penalty box and the goalkeeper Ron Bertrand on the bench, player-assistant coach John Vecchiarelli scored his 3rd goal of the night with 5 ticks left on the clock.
At the 2:33 mark of overtime, Orillia’s Brandon Ingraham who had 2 assists on the night was nailed for a questionable cross checking call and while on the power play Travis Lisabeth gave Brantford the 7-6 overtime win.
Over the weekend the Tundras added 3 players to the line-up. In Friday’s tilt, defenseman Gary Miller made his return to the Tundras line-up. Miller drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1991 entry draft played with the Tundras last season 11 games with 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points.
In Norwood versus the Vipers, the Tundras added 2 more players.
Ex Ottawa Senator Bruce Gardiner as well as defenseman and 1996 Tampa Bay Lightning pick, Jason Robinson. Gardiner did not disappoint as he was named 1st Star of the game.
The home squad opened the scoring with a power play marker by Adrian Wilson at the five minute mark of the first. The period closed with the visiting Tundras leading with goals by Kevin Shoebridge and Jesse Cook. Tundras continued putting the puck behind Viper goalie, Zach Fryia with markers by Gardiner and Andrew Hawke. Before the 2 nd period ended the Vipers closed the score to 4-3 with 2 goals in the last 3 minutes of the period including a power play marker by James Dimmie.
Norwood’s Ryan Toms tied the contest in the six minute mark of the third frame but Orillia’s Kevin Shoebridge scored his second of the night on the power play to put the Tundras up one.
Norwood’s James Dimmie scored his second of the night to put the game into overtime when the normally steady Orillia goalie Ron Bertrand had difficulty freezing a puck.
It was short. At 31 seconds of overtime Orillia’s Gardiner gets his second goal of the night with a one-timer on the top of the circle on a feed from Kyle Begley to make the final score 6-5 for the visiting Tundras.
After a two week home trip where the Tundras won 2 games and lost the third in overtime to gain 5 out of a possible six points, they face the same Norwood Vipers in the second part of the home and home series Friday night at Rotary Place. Puck drop 7:45 pm.
