Is it just me or are things coming out of Powell River quiet? Who do they have playing? Are they playing exhibition games? I must say though if anyone is going to use the 19 affiliate cards it will probably be them.

Regals are practicing and probably will not be playing any games until the new year and then will play games to build up momentum for the Savage Cup. Just a fact of life for a team that has no one to play except for teams in the central and far north of the province. But when they do play will have a competitive AAA team. And yes they will use the affiliation process to the full extent of the rules.

I have been spending alot of time out of town lately and have not been to any practices. Most of the local players will be back but I have heard that high scoring Randall Smisko may take a year off. Captain Rick McLaren, Brandon Cummings, Andy Welsh and Joe Calderone are some of the veteran players skating. Goaltender Laszlo Tamastic, MVP of the 2010 Coy Cup, BC AA Chammpionship Regal team and former Regal Harvey Fairgray's son Ryan have been between the pipes. Some of the other players from the 2010 Coy cup team have been skating and are hoping to move up to the AAA level. Have heard that the team has approached two or three former professional local players to come on board. I do not expect any formal signings will be announced until the New Year.

That is a good question. The only thing I can think of is that both teams applied to host and Hockey BC decided that the last time Regals were AAA, two seasons ago, they had to travel to Whitehorse for the Savage Cup. I have heard that Fort St. John is not very happy about the decision. I will ask around and if I come up with any information on this issue I will post it.

There was no Savage Cup in 2010. Fort St John wanted to play have one (anywhere) but BC Hockey sided with Powell River's request to travel to Whitehorse (all expenses paid trip) with the winner advancing to the Allan Cup. The Savage Cup winner was determined by whom ever advanced the furthest in the Allan Cup. There is no way team that is not AAA the previous year should be allowed to host a provincial championship regardless of there past history. Teams should be rewarded for consistently keeping there AAA programs going. Yes your darn right The Flyers are not happy about how this all went down.

Thanks for triggering my poor memory. I should have stated when the Regals were in the play- downs for an Allan Cup Berth. Has any one questioned BC Senior Director Mike Fraser or Hockey BC on this decision or is it a decision that can not be appealed?

No. I am saying if they are not happy with the decision that Hockey BC made they should do something about. If it is a decision that can be appealed go for it or we will see them in PR in March. Regals did not make the decision.

The Flyers may want to be careful what they wish for.
They hosted the Savage Cup last year and it ended up an embarassing fiasco. (no fault of their own)
And since the first year FSJ registered 'AAA' they have hosted how many Savage Cups? Im asking, honestly, as I can't quite be sure on this... but I am guessing....three???
So, while its a valid point that Powell River is getting a bit of a favorite son treatment here this spring, I can also see the logic in placing the Savage Cup somewhere other than FSJ...if BC SR AAA is going to have any hope of gaining a foothold in some place OTHER THAN FSJ...you gotta think its a good idea to give someone else a chance to showcase the SR AAA Provincial Series. For the simple sake of setting up a chance of PR continuing on at the AAA level???
I know...theres never any fast cut solutions and it seems impossible to keep everyone happy.
And even with Powell River hosting the 2012 Savage Cup...the biggest reason we MIGHT see them fly the AAA banner in 2013 would be the simple fact its back in the Pacific Region. They've never hid the fact they like to pick & choose which years they go AAA.
I would say their decision to NOT go AAA in 2011 looks like a pretty smart move, to be honest. They skipped out on a bush league tournament and who can blame them for thinking that maybe Kenora wasn't a place they needed to try to end up?
I've always said BC AAA governing seems to leave much to be desired.
But to be honest...at least they didn't award last years Savage Cup to anyone but the Flyers. And because the Flyers DID host Provincials last year...that might be the simplest logic to lead a decision this time around.

Some good points Wade, carefull what you wish for could be very true. In BC the host team pays $1000 per day for hotels and 2.25/km for travel. So with FSJ to PR being 1550 km x2=almost $7000 plus possibly $6000 hotels = 13,000k. You would need 500 fans plus per night to break even. Do these numbers match up with the other provinces? in saying that ,$13000 won't cover FSJ expences, as we all know it is not cheap to run a senior hockey club

It would be nice te see a BC AAA team give Fort St John a run this year.
The last couple years that hasn't been the case.

To answer your question Wade FSJ has hosted 2 Savage Cups in the last 6 years Ah! Thanks, flyer... Stack on the 2010 Allan Cup + 2 Mac Cups which your hosting (if you win the Savage this year) and can you really feel all that cheated?
