One nice thing about being a fan, is that if you want to have a second favorite team to cheer for, you can do just that. I suppose that could be a nice plus or a hell of a minus.
There is no question, I'm a Dundas fan first. However, I have also been a fan of the Orillia Tundras since their inception. I have a number of reasons when it comes to Orillia. Just two of those reasons are; like every other team their very existance is good for the health of the league. Secondly, they are by far the most recent team to start from scratch. That appealed to me from day one. It's been rewarding to watch and follow through thick and thin. They did not start out with a stacked team by any means, and as one might expect there was plenty of thin in the beginning. However as the saying goes, there was only one direction to go and that was up. Each year the Tundras have been better than the year before, and the scales of success have begun to rise. As much as I'm sure they don't like it, there are some nights when they still get whacked, but through the dedication of players and management they are now able to dust themselves off even after a convincing loss and turn around with a solid performance, including some pleasant surprises which have to be confidence builders. A good example of the Tundras progress is this weekend.
On Friday night before their home town fans they lost to Dundas by a convincing 12-2 score. So less than 24 hours later the Tundras put that behind them, traveled down to Whitby and beat the fresh and first place Dunnies. They racked up a 7-1 score after two periods and ended the game with an 8-3 win. I'm sure they would liked to have done better for their fans on Friday, but that's a pretty nice comeback the following night against a very good opponent who hasn't lost too many games this year, and as any hockey player can attest it sure doesn't hurt team spirit for the bus ride home and week ahead.
It was only a couple of years ago that someone asked who the hell a certain defenceman was, when the all-star team was announced. Well that guy is still playing pretty darn well, and slowly but surely management has been able to make some nice additions who have brought valued experience to shore up certain areas There is still lots to be done, but playoff action is at least a solid hope. To my mind one thing is now for sure. When the Tundras cross an opponents blue line, they no longer all of a sudden look small and non threatening. They now have an attack that can make some things happen and they can also put the puck in the net.
As always (except against Dundas , I wish them every success, and appreciate the continuing opportunity to watch them grow.
Good luck Tundras. You're certainly earning you way!
