2024 Allan Cup is in Dundas, Ontario - April.
Format and teams still to be announced. But Cup confirmed back in Dundas from my sources.
Will it be a “Challenge Cup” again? Or back to old format? My guess is another Challenge Cup until more teams register as AAA
I believe Newfoundland will enter along with Alberta winner.

Definitely is going to be a tournament. Lots of talk over the past year basically made that a possibility and given the success that was last years, why not do it again. I would expect the same format as last year. My overall feeling is people are waiting on an announcement for it. It’s getting late

Yes what I meant was the tournament was actually a “Challenge” Cup format last year. Meaning Dundas asked Clarenville to play in the tournament. Clarenville didn’t win the Newfoundland championship. But they were willing to bring their team to “challenge” for the Cup.
And what I meant by the old format is that in previous Allan Cup’s, each region would supply their champion.
For example -
- BC/Alberta Champion - Sask/Manitoba Champion - North Ontario Champion -Central Champion from Ontario/Quebec - Atlantic Champion - Host
There are now only two regions with true AAA teams - Alberta and Ontario.
The hope is in coming years, more teams will declare AAA.
Other idea that is circulating around the country is to allow AA teams to register for the competition.
Next few years will decide the direction.
For this year, in talking to Executives, it will be a Challenge Cup
Just glad Dundas has pushed and Ontario / Alberta collectively are keeping Senior AAA alive.

Hearing Clarenville will not be representing Newfoundland. Going back to the old formula. Rumour is the South Shore Breakers, winner of the 2023 Herder Cup (Newfoundland’s famous and long running Senior hockey championship) will be making the trip down to Allan Cup in Dundas.

Ironic thing is Clarenville knocked out South Shore last night in the Avalon League 2024 playoffs.
Reason Newfoundland always sent the previous years winner was it gives the team a full year to fund raise. Travelling from the Rock to anywhere for a full team is quite expensive. And we all know how little support Hockey Canada provides financially to Senior hockey. Not sure when this was decided but hoping moving forward they permanently go back to sending the previous years champion.
The yearly hope is that Hockey Canada recognizes the importance of Senior hockey. Senior AAA Allows players to continue playing at a very high level. It should be supported in the same manor that Major Junior is supported !!

Interesting development. Could explain why on their socials they said stay tuned for news.
My only hope is that they don’t give up too many concessions to any team or area and can keep it as level as possible for all teams involved.

Allowing the previous year's winner is such a bad policy...those teams from NFLd then end up bringing an all star team of guys they 'pick up' for the AC.

Allowing the previous year's winner is such a bad policy...those teams from NFLd then end up bringing an all star team of guys they 'pick up' for the AC. Newfoundland has a total population of about 510,000, and Atlantic Canada has a total population of 2.5 million; while the Golden Horseshoe has a population of about 7.75 million. Give them a break. Any way, traditionally with in the various national championships pick up players added from defeated opponents have been used at every level. The travel expense to get off of Newfoundland is ridiculous so giving a team a year of fundraising is needed as to not break the bank. Another thank you to Hockey Canada for completely ignoring senior hockey on that one.

I agree that it's kind of backwards if you really think about it, but without any additional funds contributed from HC, they need that year to get the funds together. Only other option off the top of my head (that I know would not be looked upon fondly) would be some sort of entrance fee into the AC that each participating team has, or even better, every AAA designated team puts forth at the BEGINNING of year to off set some travel costs for teams out of province. But they I feel would turn away more teams than it would lure.

I don’t think an entrance fee is the way to go. You can’t ask teams for more money when they have to already fundraise tons to get there, especially with no help anymore to offset costs.
Teams can do whatever they want in the off-season, if that means a NFL team loads up and creates a super team then so be it. Same with teams out west. I’m sure when the tournament returns that way you will see some teams load up as well.
As long as the rules are the same accross the board in terms of how big your roster can be and how many affiliates you can bring then I think it would be fine.
