So Moriarity was an embarrassing thug and did what Peter Ham hired him to do, including everything leading up to the final incident, and the final incident itself. Moriarity "is what he is".
Peter Ham was and is an embarrassment. He hired Moriarity. He gloated about it in the Expositor article posted earlier in this thread, and with great glee declared that his new hired gun was "hell on blades" and "just what they needed" and "would fit right in". The owner and general manager also, "is what he is".
So perhaps someone would be good enough to lay out for me (no pun intended) what happened and why the game referee (Kostic) called what he did when he banished Moriarty from the game at 16:24 of the 2nd period. I was there watching and I couldn't and still can't figure out the resulting call no matter how much I try. I have assumed that I may have been wrong on just about everything and still can't figure out the call. Seeing as that the final incident was against a totally defenseless player and well could have resulted in serious injury, but hopefully not, please be kind enough to bare with me.
There was a minor incident about 10-15 Ft. out from the Dundas players bench area and just a few ft. from the center red line, but was just part of the on going play, nothing to do with either players bench. The whistle was blown and it appeared to me that the referee motioned to call a penalty to Moriarity, I would think a minor penalty. Moriarity appeared to then circle and challenge to Dundas player, appearing to want to start a fight. The Dundas player seemed to want nothing to do with him or his motioning to drop the gloves. The Dundas player turned and started to skate away and another Dundas player stepped in between the two but did not attempt to inflame the situation in any way, At the same time one of the linesmen stepped in between and held Moriarity from any further forward aggression. With that being done, the single linesmen let go of Moriarity who then himself turned away and then began to slowly skate from that area in a direction opposite from the players benches.
While all of the above was taking place, referee Kostic was standing and appeared to be observing from a position across the ice about 15 ft on the opposite side of the center red line and about 15 ft. out from the Brantford penalty box. He seemed to have a pretty clear view of the so far described incident which was not heavily congested by bodies, but to be fair, their could possibly have been some limited obstruction from his direction of view. Referee Kostic's normal routine is to position himself well away from such incidents where he can have a clear view, and not to get into the close mix of such incidents as some other officials are sometimes prone to do. His habit is to keep everything out in front of him to allow as complete a picture as possible without wading in and missing something right behind his back or off to either side. His positioning for this incident was entirely as normal. His positioning for what followed was the same, but what was for sure totally unobstructed, was totally in open ice and he appeared to be looking right at it every step of the way. I was not sitting in his direct line of sight and of course can not swear to what he did or did not see. I can only say that he ought to have seen the incident that followed and that he had a clear view, and that if he were to claim that he didn't see it, then I would suggest that he was one of the few in the building not to see it. Moriarity had been what you would normally call a persistent agitator most of the time he was on the ice. His agitating was mainly with the use of his stick on opposing players within his range, weather that player was anywhere remotely near the puck or far away and weather or not that player had ever been in possession of the puck. These agitations were not of a physically damaging nature. They were a minor slash or hook or elbow that served no useful purpose other than an attempt to agitated or intimidate. They were persistent ongoing infractions which all could have been called but are often let go for a period of time. However they are also the type of activity that ought to, and usually does attract the attention of the officials, including the linesmen, who in turn when the play is stopped and there is any kind of even a minor disturbance, the linesmen would usually pay special attention and even if they would release their hands from restraining or separating such a player, they would continue to stick close to that player, and most certainly keep there eye on that player, if he were headed to the penalty box or in the direction of other players or in the direction of the referee.
Moriarity proceeded to skate in open ice toward the opposite side of the rink where the penalty box and referee Kostic was located. As he proceeded he began to veer to his right in an arc toward the blue line where he eventually approached from behind, another Dundas player, Dan Pitre.
In an act of outright violence and without warning, from behind and positioned slightly to one side, Moriaritity forcefully slugged Pitre directly on the back of his helmet with what appeared to be his close fisted gloved hand and which may have included part of his stick , knocking Pitre directly to the ice, where he lay face down and motionless for a period of time. Moriarity eventually exited the ice surface via the runway beside the Branford bench. Pitre eventually rose to his feet by his own power and did not finish the game.
The penalties assessed, all to Moriarity, were as follows; 2 mins. Interference 10 mins. Inciting Opponent 10 mins. Abuse of Official Out of Game, Abuse of Official Out of Game, 2nd Misconduct
Apart from dwelling on this embarrassing incident by an unstable player hired by an embarrassing Owner and General Manager and gleefully billed as "hell on blades", this was an important hockey game, being led at the time 4-2 by Dundas. What penalties would be assessed, could potentially have an effect on the final result of the game, and possibly others to follow. Dundas lost the services of an important player. Adjustments had to be made and those adjustments came with a price. Well maybe thats just hockey, and could have come about buy some other legitimate circumstance. Maybe?... but how in hell do those two incidents result in a single two minute short handed penalty, for interference. Can someone please explain that to me.?
Following the major incident, (the second incident of two), there was some dialog between referee Kostic and one of his linesmen. So on the unlikely chance that the referee would claim that his view was partially obstructed by Pitre who was between his viewing position and the attacking Moriarity from behind, thus somehow not allowing a proper assessment of how and by what force the blow was struck (Christ sake, I'm trying to act like a desperate defense lawyer without a case and I'm grasping at anything). Even if I could find someone to swallow that story, the original linesmen who released Moriarity from the initial incident was on the same side as the attack was perpetrated from and should have had a very clear view. Come on someone. Please help me understand! Maybe I'm wrong, thinking Kostic was indicating a minor interference penalty for the fist incident. I suppose that would clear up everything. All I'd have to do is understand that the penalty for attempted murder buy a thug and an embarrassing owner/Mgr., is a two minute interference minor. What the hell ever happened to a major penalty for attempt to injure? What the hell ever happened to a major penalty for head check, which are now supposed to be the order of the day, and are in fact routinely handed out for such lessor incidents that don't even begin to compare?
Do I wish the outcome would have been different? Frankly yes. AM I just crying in my milk? No I am not.
I sometimes just like to understand things, and I'm asking for someone's help!

Munzie...the GM21 comes with a 2game suspension or a $150 fine (buyback)..Not talking for ref Kostic..perhaps the only penalty he might have called is MP 40 Deliberate attempt to insure resulting in Four (4) additional games , a roughing after whistle just adds 2 mins but might have been a small piece of justice and another PP chance.. I don't know or see the situation and it would be difficult for DR to comment on matter. We have seen"soccer injuries" on the ice before and yes I know you said Pitrie didn't return. I wonder if Kostic was just happy/relieved he had Gerald tossed for the game. Just trying to be objective and maybe give some the benefit of doubt.
NOW THE REAL POLL QUESTION? 1. Will Ham pay fine? OR 2. Make Gerald sit 2 games?? That would include game 1 of the playoffs vs Dundas.

Gerald played for us for several years and was the most popular player ever in McCoys history...I think that Munzie (or perhaps her husband-not knowing the gender) must have been a Blast reject along the way. He sounds very bitter, frustrated and definitely has too much time on his hands. The only help I can offer him or her is to get a life. More Gerald, less Munzie! Nice crowd in Brantford and a very, very entertaining game. Keep it up boys and you'll fill the buildings.

It a he and was a Hornet fan. When Gerald played in Dundas every team had a player like him now the league has changed and there is no place for that type of player. There will be the odd scrap and each team has there man but not the fly off the wall nutty shit that happened last night , like i said in a earlier post someone was going to get hurt from his shit he dose and now it has happened. Hope for the best that MR. Pitre is ok and MR. Hamm will see the light and stop playing him.The guy up in the box should ask his player how they realy fell about Gerald playing because i heard one fo the Brantford player say when he got kicked out that now we can have a hockey game.

Exactly. Pitre is a classy little player whom I remember well from a couple AC's in the past. The type of player Moriarty is....isn't reallly any type of player at all.

I guess I'm going bowling with ronleee ya, said the sleeping giant with one eye open:) Ham will not let 2nd place slip away if he has a chance for it!!! Thats major dollars for that 7th home game even if gates are split etc cuz the barn/s will be full. Why wouldnt they show with a squad, beat dundas and make the McCoys have to take a team to Norwood on sunday to beat the vipers to keep 2nd spot? If the Mccoys do win, who will they send to Norwood for a sunday game?? Who will Norwood have show for the Orillia game Saturday??? Probably be able to send them in a mini school bus!!! I cant see much of a squad for either Saturday or sunday game...tis a shame but thats the nature of the beast!

I guess I'm going bowling with ronleee What a load of crap this is planted comment to reduce fan interest in this Friday's Dundas game, an attempt to ensure the Blast fans won't follow the team its as easy to see through as a pain of glass. Th Blast will have all hands on Deck to gain home ice advantage rest assured. This move is a disgrace to the players who work so hard to put on a great game. If Dundas ever stoop this low let me know. Regards Don Robertson
