They say that one player does not make a team - agreed. But the Dundas Real McCoys are 6-1 since ex-NHL Penguins/Sabres defenceman Jay McKee joined the team. Steady player with over 800 NHL games.
The only loss was the meaningless last game of the season with nothing on the line, and many regulars out of the lineup.
Defence has always been the achilles heel of the McCoys.
Now up 3-0 over the Dunlops....

I believe it was "naitch" who implied McKee could be the biggest signing ever made in the ACH/MLH when the announcement first came down.
Searching my limited knowledge bank on Ontario SR hockey and I can't think of a player to name in dispute of that.
I have to think McKee is on the ice a lot for Dundas & no doubt he would make a monumental impact on most games.

I'm surprised none of the Dundas contingent on the board have pointed out Scott Stafford is playing out there.
Fascinating story. Hard to cheer against them at this point because I have to admit Id love to see this guy playing in Red Deer.

Hi Wade; My comments on the first three games won't change no matter how the rest of the series goes, because those games are already in the books. However right know the priority is on the job at hand against a very good Whitby team and I do not wish to get in the way. It will be my sincere honor to expand on your comments and more at series end as fairly as I can. Kindly stay tuned.

I have been to games where there is a collective "that's the guy with 1 hand" in the stands/amongst the fans...then the kids in the stands are pointing at him in awe. It gives me goose bumps when i see the kids pointing at him & acknowledging what he is able to do & do well.

Thought I would have had time earlier , but....... Re: Jay McKee Since joining (ACH) Dundas Real McCoys in late January after a lengthy NHL career, Jay has played in all but one game, thankfully erasing any concerns about his intended commitment. Although many might assume that NHL credentials would automatically translate into all-star status at any lower level, life's reality says that is not necessarily so. For some guys, age can have a sudden and dramatic effect. For others who have thrived in a big league setting and style of play, they may find the adjustment between levels awkward. In short, regardless of undisputed credentials, some guys can play effectively anywhere and for others it's not so smooth. With Jay Mckee it certainly appears that he has brought the smarts to assess and make any needed adjustments, and has maintained the physical conditioning to make it all work. Adding to that, Jay has shown so far that he does what he has probably always done in a very steady and exceptional way. His play by example and steadying demeanor appear to have had a rising effect on fellow team mates. It also doesn't hurt, that when a guy who specialized at blocking shots for a living, but has suggested those days may be passed, nevertheless suddenly appeared to come diving out of nowhere to block a shot with his head just as it was about to go into the wide open net, on the once only occasion when the otherwise stellar backup goal tender Neil Clelland was caught out of position in game #3 against Whitby. It was one of those moments when you just couldn't hold yourself back from crying out "holy smokes, did I really see what I think I just saw?" For those expecting to see Bobby Orr type end to end rushes on a frequent basis, or someone trying to be all things at all times, you may be disappointed. However if you wish to appreciate a veteran who excels at his craft, I think you will be very well rewarded. Re: Scott Stafford Had I made this post last weekend as promised before Scott's 23rd birthday, we would have been talking about the accomplishments of a younger 22 year old, just two years removed from Ontario Jr. B hockey and now in his second year of (ACH) Senior 'AAA'. No matter how you cut it, this level of senior hockey is darn good, with many players possessing mature skill sets and professional experience. The subtleties which many possess can often separate the men from the boys, and to that extent there are not an abundance of "early 20 year olds" who make the grade. Scott Staffford has overcome those odds. So what, if he has done it with only one hand? It's nothing new for him. For those who are interested to gain a better understanding I would recommend spending a few minutes by plugging into Google; Scott Stafford Hockey Player. The articles are all there. What has impressed me and many others around ACH is the character and determination of this young man. He expects nothing that he can't earn. And that's a good thing, because with the Dundas Real McCoys, 25 players is the limit and there is no room for a free ride. Last year, although he played well, when it came to the mid January cut-down date Scott was narrowly released by the team hoping to land a more experienced player for the stretch run. His reaction was, if there was even a chance that he might get re-signed, then he wanted to stick around, practice hard, and hope for the best. Determination paid off. He did get re-signed and finished the season with 7 goals & 6 assists for 13 points. When he wasn't playing he was eagerly watching and you could feel the wheels turning in his head, assessing what he had to do in order to improve himself. All the little things like being ready to receive a pass where things happen faster than at previous levels, and utilizing his exceptional skating abilities on both offense and defense. If there was any question of Scott's ability to further improve his play while making the necessary compensations, those questions are being positively answered as time goes on. It's only natural that you look close to see how he plays without one hand, but for me, I don't know why I still bother. I still haven't figured out exactly what the hells going on. All I know is that it's pretty good and improving all the time. It's obvious too, that he puts team first and himself second. This season in just his second year of senior hockey and while juggling university studies, Scott's overall level of play has improved significantly. He has also chalked up 8 goals & 9 assists in the regular season and added 2 goals & 1 assist in the playoffs so far. The two playoff goals were scored early in the 3rd period of game #2 against Whitby. They lifted Dundas from a 3-2 deficit to a 4-3 lead and paved the way for the 5-4 victory. Scott S, had also set up his speedy winger Scott Mifsud earlier in the game to erase another deficit. IMO those goals may have been the turning point of the series. Instead of Whitby tying up the series at one game each, Dundas went ahead 2 games to none. And I am told, that when Mr. Stafford came back to the bench and was praised by his bosses, he just gave them the usual infectious smile and said, "just a couple more short handed goals". This year the January cut-down day came and went. This time there was no need to re-sign him. He had already convincingly made the cut!!!

Should be a good game tonight as well as series. Too bad I can't watch it all. Good luck McCoys.
