I managed to take in the McCoy's home opener vs Brantford Fri night. Fairly entertaining game...the one thing that stands out to me is the SPEED of the game these days I don't think the talent is there in terms of hands and East-West skills, but this is definitely high-octane, North-South transition hockey.
My issue has been for a long time that Sr. AAA hovkey has always been better than the officiating it eceives...nowhere was that more painfully obvious than Fri night. Wow. When the man in charge was not blowing obvious calls, or banishing guys and handing out misconducts like Halloween candy, he was simply making thing sup. First priod was a little slow and sloppy. McCoys would have liked to cash in on a couple more chances than they did, as Bed really took over the game in the second. That is when the game really started to get some nice flow, and a little bite to it...that is also when dufus decided to take centre stage. Any time there was a scrum, he would make a completely phantom call, penalizing a player who would be left as slack-jawed as the good folks in the crowd as to why he was being punished. It was ridiculous. I looked at my old man a couple times, and he just stood there shaking his head with sad amazement in his eyes...Obviously, I don't know what is a penalty any more.
The 3rd period was even worse, as some good clan hits were called for some sort of penalty, while a couple real bad charges were let go...the guy was simply rolling the dice. The issue here, is that no standard was established. Either call i tight, and any questionable big hit gets the gate (which wold be unfortunate, but at least players would know where the line was) or let everything short of intent to injure go, and let the boys play. Pic one...but this 'Rochambeau' every time somebody made body contact was a disgrace...especially the ever-arbitrary 'head check' and subsequent misconduct. It really detracts from the game.
Oh, and one other thing...can we PLEASE do without the seemingly every-game grandstanding by the refs calling these ridiculous 'warm-up violations'?? We get it stripes, its your show, and we pay to watch you work.
