I've just been informed that Alberta will be HOSTING 2014 McKenzie Cup.
As per Dean Filane.

does it not alternate each year?

does it not alternate each year? Yes. And. No. The Mac Cup is supposed to follow an alternating rhythm back & forth between Alberta & BC. But... It doesn't. Mac Cup 2009 was in Alberta (Bentley Generals). Mac Cup 2010 was the property of BC...but...because Alberta & BC both sent teams to the Allan Cup (FSJ) there was no Mac Cup Series required. It was still counted as having been BC's Mac Cup year, though. Because...Mac Cup 2011 was played in Alberta (Bentley Generals). Mac Cup 2012 was in BC (Powell River). Mac Cup 2013 wasn't required because, once again, BC & Alberta both sent teams to the Allan Cup (Bentley Generals)...In this vein...the 2014 Mac Cup should be in BC. I was told last spring...even though it was BC's turn to HOST the Mac Cup...it was NEVER a given that's how it would work out. There were mitigating circumstances which required some haggling back & forth and the Mac Cup is now being played in Alberta. That's what I know.

how many BC teams will even bother this year? Just Powell?

how many BC teams will even bother this year? Just Powell? Correct. FSJ dropped back to the SR AA level leaving Powell River Regals as the lone SR AAA team in BC. I have no idea what they've got for players or what kind of schedule they're playing or what their grand scheme could be when it comes time to come out to Alberta. Who knows...they could end up the best team in Canada. Or... A laughing stock.

Is it me, or does FSJ just kind of declare AAA every few years when it benefits them?
and have we lost Trail for good?

Is it me, or does FSJ just kind of declare AAA every few years when it benefits them? and have we lost Trail for good? Trail has been done for awhile now. I think 06' or 07' was their last hurrah. FSJ had posted the bond for SR AAA each year going back to 07'. They did so...at an extremely disproportionate ratio of $ going out over $ coming in. This...and the fact they were less & less competitive with Alberta's top SR AAA teams the past couple of years...made it tough for them to justify pushing any further onward. I think...it could be different if the league FSJ plays in (NPHL) was more accommodating towards the idea of 'SR AAA' hockey...but...that's not the case. In fact...that league blackballed SR AAA teams a few years ago and essentially killed any hope of northern based 'AAA' teams having a fighting chance in BC or Alberta.
