If Newfoundland is running the best SR league in Canada...and that could very well be the case...I don't think it's because players are getting paid...I think it's because fans & communities are supporting the league.

Furthermore...given the painful struggles of SR hockey...coast to coast...it's entirely moot which league is the best.
Truth is...NOBODY has a fail safe solution/agenda/league anymore.

fans coming through the turnstyles allows teams to compensate players...cause and effect...
fans are n ot turning out to see inferior hockey...and that league has its attendance troubles...let's face it the only reason Sr hockey works is operators willing to take a loss to make it happen...that is universal.

Fans aren't turning out to see ANY hockey, aside from Major Juniors & NHL.

Greg Stewart...2 games played this weekend...0 points...8 minutes in penalties...looked ok at times...this is a good league here...and I think he just found out that...had his pocket pick a couple of times...and took a couple of good hits.

what do you figure the Gennies lose in a year? $50 K? I highly doubt the person(s) in charge of the team finances allows for those kind of "sexy" numbers. I know they fight tooth and nail...year round...to get help from Hockey Alberta & Hockey Canada...taking any angle they can to make sure they're keeping the show afloat without any credit crutches or emergency cash calls. They've lead the fight for more $$$ given to Allan Cup teams...and they've probably won more ground than they've lost...but...not by a lot and they don't get much help from the Provincial Brethren, either. Because...as we all know...the Gens are (almost always) the team saddled with the cost of attending the big dance via Alberta. I also know they've had talent show up at the club house door expecting a free bundle of composite sticks just for showing up and I've watched (with amusement) as that "talent" never even got his boots off before being turned around and driving away in his truck. On the other hand...they've been slick at times, too. In 2011...they were flying Brandon Smith out of Kelowna at about a round trip/week rate for most of that spring. There was a huge to-do about it...but...those flights were funded from a huge glut of air miles the squad had smartly stocked away and Im betting there is a card in someones wallet...somewhere...with some magical abilities to this day...just waiting for the right fit/need to come along. Smith was certainly worth the weight of the magnetic stripe. He was a PP genius who would have been a show stopper in Kenora...until a groin injury shut him down the last game prior to the tournament. www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=5026

That is an excellent league...but be honest about why...players all get paid. Period. And Stewart will be on the Clarenville or GFW roster by next April. No he won't Don Robertson

Don - can you clarify the carding rules for us please.
Are players protected until the Jan 10th cutdown date or can teams choose to use a card and protect them for a full season?
Are you implying that Stewart won't be released this season from his AAA card if Dundas holds his rights for the whole season? That would explain how he could still play for Gander who is a non AAA team but not for a AAA competing in the Allan Cup.
Under that scenario, is there a possibility that Stewart could play in Gander and potentially rejoin Dundas at any time as long as he resigned his current season's card similar to a player who played as an affiliate or in the WOAA?

Interesting Sniper, I think you are on to something...I'm not saying it will happen or that was what Don was hinting at, but I for one, would love to see Stewart back with Dundas in Jan/Feb or for the playoffs. Maybe he could do whatMcmillan did last season, after Gander is out, he would play for Dundas, just a thought.

All of last season's players are protected until Jan 10 unless a club decides to use one of their cards to protect him after Jan 10 hence owning him until Jan 10th the next season. I'm not prepared to go into the Stewart deal but stand by statement earlier Regards Don Robertson

Thanks for the feedback Don. Us fans appreciate the insight!
I didn't realize that a team could basically control a player for a season and a half in essence if they wanted to use a card. So there would be a possibility for Stewart to rejoin Dundas if arrangements were made.
I suspect that rarely happens though based on Munzie's prior comments but interesting all the same.

Stewart is ineligible to play any sanctioned games until January 10th unless Dundas decided to issue his release.

I commented earlier about how rare it is for release(s) to be denied at this level. (Delayed might be a different story ?) However...there are always circumstances closed from view of the public eye and we know the Atlantic Region isn't hurting in the way the rules alre already aligned for them this year...so...I guess just see how this all plays out.
