The NESHL has a huge draw in attendence, you can see it in many clips on the interwebs.
I'm not opposed to the tourney being held there, the maritime a has a terrible Sr presence, hell, I played Jr A out there and was drafted into the QMJHL and I didn't know there was a senior league short of NFDL out there before I moved to Alberta and started playing.
I'm all for promoting senior hockey, I love playing it, I enjoy the bus rides, I love being around the boys and shooting the shit. If this means we get more people to know senior hockey lives out east, I'm all for it.
I'm with Wade that there may be some more appropriate places to host, but we need to look at this thing as a whole and what can grow the game. If you look at leagues and the teams in it now, yes, it's in trouble, especially the Chinook, 4 teams, I mean this has been a league around for ages. Great hockey and great support, but it can be better. The Smyth signing, huge.
Now if the cup is in a smaller market next year, could it bring interest for more teams and players who didn't have the know that this was available to them before? I hope so.
Bottom line, we need to support this regardless of where it is. There's no point to piss and moan where it could be and should be. It's in NB, let's get behind it and hopefully grow the AAA brand across the board again.

WestJet Cup... or bring back the Air Canada Cup and toss in Allan somewhere... There's tons of major sponsors out there that can help facilitate the tournament. Ps. Reason for looking at an air line, maybe a slight reduction in travel costs... or hell, throw in a Sunwing Vacation Allan Cup and get cheap flights and probably a tan if you win the whole thing! Just a thought, why not look for a travelesq type sponsor to help those teams not rolling in cash to actually make a viable attempt at the cup? It's been looked into but Air Canada are a premium Hockey Canada and that blocks any other airline. Don Robetson ...greyhound Allan cup? Haha What does AC sponsor now?

I think it's great, things like this only legitimize Sr AAA more and make it OK for other high profile guys to play with teams. More of this will create more interest and with luck expansion in the Chinook League, ( that may be a giant leap but it won't hurt anything ) Cheers Don Robertson Funny how fast fortunes can change. 24 HRS ago, I'd have been tempted to predict the entire CHL might have 1-2 more years as a SR AAA entity. This signing has already resulted in a spontaneous combustion of renewed interest & excitement. The Glenn Hall Arena is the hottest ticket in Oil Country this afternoon. Agreed! There's a new buzz around and that's 110% a good thing!

^ I agree with Don here, it can only be a good thing for Sr. Hockey.
Looking at the way the Alberta senior hockey teams are shaping up, not only Chinook, there may very well be some changes about. Heard some rumblings about Bonnyville and Daysland being pushed out of the NCHL AA league, which would leave them searching, more than likely, to the Chinook. Now, again, only rumblings for now. But looking at the stats, Bonnyville outscored their opponents by a goal diff of +86 (121 for and 35 against) in 15 games. Daysland wasn't far behind outscoring their opponents +62 (107f vs. 45a).
Would be nice to see the Chinook expand, but only if it can absorb some capable teams that can compete at the level required.

It's confirmed, he's dressing tonight. That's going to put some fans in the stands for sure! Great pick up by Stony! They seem pretty serious about this season!

Thoughts on how any of the AA teams could step up to AAA in the Chinook now that it's down to 4 squads? Look at some of the games in there with teams like Bonnyville and Tofield running the North Division, while Devon and Daysland seem to be fairing well in the South as well. www.northcentralhockeyleague.com/leagues/standingsTotals.cfm?leagueID=17388&clientID=4841Just a thought on making it more competitive, or even just more exciting for the teams not doing so well in the Chinook consistently to have some better quality games, if that makes sense.

Stony handled Devon easily, winning 13-4. Stony had pretty much their starting roster, short of a few guys and the Barons dressed 8 returning vets and the rest was a tryout squad. It clearly showed.

I think Alberta only has three teams, I heard that Fort only has like twelve guys this year As far as I know, no sign of this for Ft Sask.

Yeah, I heard some rumors of a few AA teams looking to make a jump, but that didn't pan out, rejected by the CHL. Which I thinks smart, no point watering down the league just to field a few extra teams. Going to be interesting watching the CHL this season and the NCHL with the new divisions. Pretty excited to see how it all pans out. Going to be some travelling for those boys.

Yeah, it's a pretty lame move by Rosetown... leaves CHL with 4 teams while the Sr. AA expands to 12. Not sure if any of the AA teams could have competed with the current rosters, but at least would have been nice to see a team put together and maybe give some of the guys a chance. But that's still a long shot.
Either way, bush league move and a shame.
